GUARANTEES
PROVIDED TO THE BUYER |
The auction
system in France (in its present form) offers more guarantees to the buyer
and seller than any other system.
The sale catalogue:
The descriptions of lots, which are listed in the catalogue, engage the
responsibility of the expert. The "before sale" display of lots
allows the purchaser to personally assess the physical condition of the
goods.
The presence of
an expert at a public sale represents an additional guarantee
for the buyer. Since 1985, auctioneers are no longer fully responsible
for descriptions provided in the sales catalogue. In effect, the auctioneer
relinguishes responsibility in matters of authenticity providing
an expert assists him.
The
authenticity certificate proposed by an expert is valid for 30 years.
Consequently auctioneers select an expert from among the most competent
in their field of specialisation

GUARANTEES PROVIDED
TO THE SELLER |
Payment:
French law states that a sale is settled at the fall of the hammer. In
public auction sales the auctioneer ensures a payment guarantee to the
seller.
The reserve price:
The reserve price is a minimum fixed by the seller before the sale, and
is known only to the auctioneer and the expert. (If an item of furniture
or other good remain unsold, the seller does not bear any expense, other
than transport expenses).
